While the evening was full of socially distanced chatting and creating, crocheter Antonia Surco pointed out another important element of the circle: “Crocheting is good therapy especially when we’re stuck inside our houses because of COVID. This definitely helps remove stress.”
The circle is a drop-in space and all are welcome. The next crochet circle is Tuesday, August 18 at 6:00 pm at Argyle Middle School, 2400 Bel Pre Road, Silver Spring. Please bring a chair and face mask.

With continued social distancing and other necessary disruptions to everyday life, simple pleasures can take on new significance. One such simple pleasure is crocheting. For three Tuesday evenings in August, Network Builder Carmen Hernandez is partnering with Yarn Bomb 2020 to host an outdoor crochet circle at Argyle Middle School. The crochet circle is paired with IMPACT Sports youth soccer practices. The circle is a perfect hangout for parents waiting during sports practice.
The circle’s first meeting on August 4 brought together eleven women under a shady tree outside Argyle. They gathered to learn (or in some cases, remember) the art of crochet–a way of creating textiles by using a hook to interlock yarn. Volunteer teachers Edith Salazar and Felisa Federman are both with Yarn Bomb 2020, a group of knitters and crocheters affiliated with the Wheaton Arts Parade. Edith and Felisa supplied hooks, yarn, and lots of know-how to eager participants.
