“Takeover,” described by Amy Goodman of Democracy Now as “extraordinary,” follows the 12 historic hours on July 14, 1970 when members of the Puerto Rican revolutionary group the Young Lords Party took over the dilapidated Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx of New York City. The documentary chronicles “their resistance to institutions founded on wealth and White supremacy, and their collective struggle for quality, accessible healthcare.”

We’ve chosen “Takeover” for “Film & Discussion” as a vehicle for looking at political radicalism in new ways, honoring cross-racial solidarity, and remembering the lessons learned by our activist ancestors. We believe it’s particularly important to consider these ideas right now as we’re entering an important election season that could determine whether we choose to move forward in bold and transformative ways or not.
