“To me, teamwork is the beauty of our sport, where you have five acting as one. You become selfless.”
IMPACT Sports began as a dream of an early Impact network member, and now provides recreational sports and enrichment for hundreds of low-income and immigrant youth. This program empowers families to form and operate youth sports teams in neighborhoods where young people are typically disconnected from local athletic leagues.
IMPACT Sports facilitates and supports an emerging sports network in the Long Branch, Wheaton, and East County communities. Youth are engaged in year-round sports activities including Fall Soccer, Winter Basketball and Spring Soccer.
Our efforts to break down barriers to participation (including cost and proximity of play) have resulted in high levels of youth participation and parental involvement. To date, IMPACT Sports have provided programs to 260 fall Soccer players and 300 winter basketball players, including a total of 390 unique players. Additionally, the sports coordinators worked with partners and parents, making it possible to introduce such new sports offerings as running club, tae kwon do, and ultimate frisbee.
