SUMMARY:Film & Discussion: Decolonizing Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:The month of July is designated as “BIPOC Mental Health Month” in order to bring awareness to the unique mental health challenges and needs of historically disenfranchised or oppressed racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Black\, Indigenous peoples\, and other People of Color (BIPOC) experience a broad spectrum of ongoing discrimination\, oppression\, and inequity within the mental healthcare industry.\n\nDuring this one hour\, online event\, we will watch a series of interviews from the PBS World Channel series “Decolonizing Mental Health.” This series examines the systemic inequities that prevent BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color) communities from receiving appropriate treatment. The interviews focus on the transformative work of therapists and individuals of color who are changing the narrative of what mental health support can look like in ways that are more affirming\, culturally responsive\, and dismantle racism.\nA facilitated discussion will follow the film viewing.\n\nUse this link to register for this FREE event: https://tinyurl.com/y669r3n5\n———————————————\nWe are pleased to offer MCPS Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for students age 16 or older who participate in this event.  To receive SSL hours\, you must pre-register for this event through the Montgomery County Volunteer Center using this link:\nhttps://montgomerycountymd.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=711767
