SUMMARY:Rethinking Thanksgiving
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online Film & Discussion event to reflect on Indigenous Peoples history in the U.S. in light of this Thanksgiving holiday. The purpose of this space is to explore meaningful ways we can honor Indigenous Peoples\, history\, and tackle myths of Thanksgiving.\n\n\nThanksgiving brings to the occasion a time where loved ones can gather in celebration\, however\, the holiday’s mythical origins silence the violent history that\, in part\, brought the holiday to fruition. During our time together\, we will hold space for our favorite things about Thanksgiving\, the formal holiday’s violent origins\, and how we can honor Indigenous Peoples in consideration of these contrasting dynamics.\nThe event will include a video viewing and large- and small-group discussions. For a more intimate conversation\, this event will be capped at 20 registrants.\n\n\nPlease use this link to register for this FREE event: https://tinyurl.com/xaurt32x

SUMMARY:Film and Discussion of "Disclosure"
DESCRIPTION:In honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month\, please join us online as we watch “Disclosure\,” a documentary that explores how decades-old stereotypes\, memes\, and tropes in the media both form and reflect our understanding of transgender issues.\n\nThe film shows the power of the media to shape societal attitudes about groups of people whose voices and experiences have been suppressed. “Disclosure” premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is described as\, “an ambitious\, ground-breaking and nuanced examination of over one hundred years of trans representation on screen.”\n\nWe’ve selected this film for Pride Month because it allows us to uplift the stories of those most marginalized within an already marginalized community. We believe this film is a perfect complement to this year’s film and discussion series as it brings an intersectional lens to our focus on cross-racial solidarity.\n\nAll are welcome to join the viewing of the documentary\, but please note that it is rated MA for mature audiences. The film frankly depicts trans struggles\, contains some strong language\, and has brief nudity. After the documentary\, we will facilitate a space for reflection for those who want to participate.\n\nPlease use this link to register for this FREE online event: https://tinyurl.com/56awfpb2\n———————————\nThis program year\, IMPACT’s “Film and Discussion” series is focused on cross-racial solidarity. The purpose of each film is to understand each other’s struggles\, histories we haven’t been taught\, and how these topics connect to our pursuit of justice and liberation today. This series builds on our June 2020 webinar Building a Multi-Racial Movement: Challenges + Promises. Watch that webinar here: https://impactsilverspring.org/building_justice/ \nSee Less

SUMMARY:Solidarity: Resistance to State and Hate Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join Impact Silver Spring\, Montgomery County Progressive Asian American Network (MoCoPAAN)\, and the Asian American Progressive Student Union (AAPSU) in celebration of Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Heritage month as we view and discuss a selection of clips and feature pieces documenting the rich history of struggle\, perseverance\, and activism throughout Asian American communities. Given the racial reckonings of the past year\, this event will focus on Solidarity: Resistance to State and Hate Violence from both a historical and current day perspective. We would like to acknowledge that although this event will focus on Asian Americans\, the experiences of Pacific Islanders are just as unique\, historic\, and important to discuss. As such\, the organizers of the event will briefly discuss the relationships and differences between Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders\, as well as distribute resources for participants to learn more about and support Pacific Islander communities. \nIn this discussion-based event\, we will explore such histories as the era of Asian exclusion\, Japanese American internment\, and Islamophobia/hate crimes against South Asian Americans following the events of 9/11. Throughout all discussions\, we will focus on how state-backed violence against Asian Americans has subsequently encouraged hate violence and crimes targeting these same communities. In building a better understanding of Asian American experiences and history\, we hope to build on conversations of multi-racial coalitions and solidarity as resistance to the violence of white supremacy. \nTo register for this free event\, use the link here: https://tinyurl.com/2z3a4h8u

SUMMARY:Film and Discussion of "And She Could Be Next"
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women’s History Month\, we will be viewing and discussing online part I of the documentary “And She Could Be Next.”\nFilmed throughout 2018 and into 2019\, by a team of women filmmakers of color\, the documentary features a dynamic slate of history-makers including: Stacey Abrams (GA)\, Rashida Tlaib (MI)\, Lucy McBath (GA)\, Veronica Escobar (TX)\, Maria Elena Durazo (CA)\, and Bushra Amiwala (IL). The film also follows the incredible “hidden figures” of the movement–women of color organizers without whose work\, nothing would be possible.\n\nIn a polarized America\, where the dual forces of white supremacy and patriarchy threaten to further erode our democracy\, a game-changing transformation is happening at the grassroots. This documentary shows us a defiant group of women of color–as candidates and organizers–who are harnessing the political power of this New American Majority.\nUse this link to register for this FREE online event: https://tinyurl.com/s4d2zdpv\n\n———————————————\nThis program year\, IMPACT’s “Film and Discussion” series is focused on cross-racial solidarity. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nDear IMPACT Friends\, \nIn an effort to do our part to minimize the spread of the coronavirus\, we have made the following decisions\, which will be in effect until further notice: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll IMPACT in-person events\, gatherings\, and small/large group meetings will be cancelled until further notice. \n\n\nWe are exploring ways for us to stay connected on-line and virtually–please be on the look-out for updates! \n\n\nThe IMPACT Sports program will follow the protocol and decisions of Montgomery County Public Schools.  As of now\, Governor Hogan has ordered all public schools to close from March 16 through March 27. \n\n\nIMPACT staff has been instructed to work remotely from home until further notice. \n\n\nAt a time when we are being asked to socially distance ourselves from one another\, we want to encourage everyone to remember that our existence is only made meaningful in the context of community and our interconnectedness. \nIn addition to making sure we do what we can to stay healthy\, let’s also think of creative ways we can share resources and strategies to protect each other and keep each other safe–particularly the elderly; those without access to healthcare\, child care\, and other basic needs; and those who will be impacted economically.  We also ask each of us to pay attention to the increased acts of bigotry and racism against Asian Americans\, and to do our part to combat the rising tide of xenophobia and glaring systemic inequities made more strikingly visible in this moment.  \nWe want to close with a reminder that even during this time of disruption\, we should try and find beauty and joy on a daily basis.  Spring is just about here and the blossoms are appearing as always. Warmer weather allows us to be more expansive in our thoughts. Bring more music\, colors\, art\, poetry into your lives. It will help us to build our own resilience to get us through these challenging times and stay committed to the work of racial equity\, justice\, and liberation. \n– Jayne Park\, Executive Director and Nanette Alvey\, Board Chair

SUMMARY:MORE (Montgomery County Racial Equity) Network Celebration
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, November 19\, the Racial Equity and Social Justice Bill (Bill 27-19) was passed unanimously by the Montgomery County Council! \nWhile there’s a lot of work ahead of us to ensure full and effective implementation of this new law\, it’s also important we take a moment to recognize and celebrate what we have accomplished together.  Let’s celebrate at Not Your Average Joe‘s (8661 Colesville Road\, Suite C-153\, Silver Spring MD) on Thursday\, December 5 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  We look forward to seeing you there! \nThe final version of Bill 27-19 incorporated amendments presented by members of the MORE Network\, including the following: \n\nIncreases the number of community members on the Racial Equity and Social Justice Advisory Committee from three to eight.\nRequires all bills (except for expedited ones) to have a racial equity analysis before being enacted.\nProvides annual $2\,000 stipend for community members serving on the advisory committee.\nMandates racial equity and social justice training for all county staff.\n\nThis is a HUGE win for the MORE Network–in fact\, Council President Navarro pointed to the work of MORE several times in her remarks. \nThis historic moment was covered in both The Washington Post and Bethesda BEAT with some great quotes from network members Carolyn Lowery\, Hashim Jabar\, and Joanna Silver!
